About the Friends of Lewes Victoria Hospital
Founded in 1966, the Friends of Lewes Victoria Hospital is a registered charity (247336), which provides support to the Lewes Victoria Hospital.
Originally the League of Friends it has been known simply as the Friends since 2015. Its purpose is to support the hospital and in so doing the community it serves, by donating equipment and helping to fund amenities, which benefit the services and make the environment more comfortable for patients and staff. Virtually every department and many patients have benefited in some way from the enhancements provided by the Friends.
Fundraising originated with a team of collectors who visited homes in their street. Within 2 years they had raised over £17,000, which was used to refurbish the operating theatres. Door-to-door collecting has now ceased, but many local organisations and businesses continue to raise funds for the hospital. Generous donations from grateful patients, collections and legacies are further important sources of funding. In addition, the Friends continue to organise fundraising events such as a biannual carol concert, golf day and open gardens. To date, almost £5.5 million has been raised.
